What Is a Quality Management System? Why It Matters to Precision Machining Customers

Quality should be the outcome of a controlled manufacturing process, not luck. A Quality Management System (QMS) is the documented framework of procedures, responsibilities, records and verification used to consistently meet customer requirements.

For precision machining, quality begins during contract and drawing review. Teams identify the correct drawing revision, material and heat-treatment specifications, geometrical tolerances, special process requirements, and inspection deliverables. Purchasing controls verify supplier and material requirements. Manufacturing controls support repeatable programming, setup and operations. Appropriate metrology equipment and recorded measurements help verify conformity. Nonconforming products are identified and controlled, and corrective actions address root causes.

What does a QMS guarantee? No QMS can promise zero defects. A well-implemented system establishes accountability, evidence of conformity, controls for deviations, and a method for continual improvement. This makes the supplier easier for customers to evaluate and trust.

Relentless Manufacturing maintains a documented quality management system and is actively implementing ISO 9001 requirements. ISO 9001 certification has NOT yet been achieved. We encourage customers to identify required inspection, traceability and documentation requirements during quotation.
